I just read the Blog of a teacher by the name of Risha Mullins.
I’m angry enough about book banning as is, but the educator in me is silently screaming in rage at the hell this woman has been put through.
What angers me most is the manner (back-stabbing letter writing, closed door back-room meetings, threats to school board members) in which these people interfere. Don’t these parents realise that they come off as, "we want our children to be as bigoted and ignorant as we are."
What they fail to understand is that the more they complain, the more likely the kids are to find those books somewhere and read them, if for no other reason than to see what the controversy is about.
And in doing so, the students anger over loosing an educator they feel they can connect with is going to be turned back, not against the school, but against their own parents.
