Welcome to the return of The Friday Fish Wrap.
In case you haven’t seen the new Google Service Agreement, it states:
“Our Services display some content that is not Google’s. This content is the sole responsibility of the entity that makes it available. We may review content to determine whether it is illegal or violates our policies, and we may remove or refuse to display content that we reasonably believe violates our policies or the law. But that does not necessarily mean that we review content, so please don’t assume that we do.”
It is, when you get right down to it, the simplest form of CYA I’ve ever seen. It’s actually quite brilliant.
Here’s what it means…
1) If you’re one of those whiners who is constantly flooding our email and clogging our telephone lines with demands that we remove everything you don’t like… even though you don’t have to look at it?
We’re here to tell you we do not, as a a matter of course or by law, review every damn thing someone writes or posts on our service.
In other words: We’re not the church police.
2) If you’re one of those people who do violate the rules or the laws of the land in which you reside?
If the big bad men in black suits or whatever the fashion is where you live do come to get you for what you’ve done?
Too bad, sucker. We’re washing our hands of any liability or responsibility right here and now for all to see.
3) If ‘The Inquisition’ or men with torches do come storming our fortress, breathing down our necks or looking over our shoulders?
Our rules and policies are whatever we say they are, whenever it’s convenient… or necessary… to save ourselves.
We therefore reserve the right to flush anything they* don’t approve of right down the drain…
… and you with it.
*And No; We don’t know who they are either.
… But They do.
