The Friday Fishwrap: Music & Musings

All Aboard The A Trane:

One of my favourite musicians, the incomparable Jessica Williams, has done it again with her new album, Freedom Trane – by the Jessica William’s Trio,  featuring Mel Brown on drums and Dave Captein on bass.

The album is dedicated to John Coltrane – A leading light of Jessica’s musical journey. It features original compositions by Jessica and works written by the great saxophonist and spiritual seeker.

Available on Origin Records.

A Short walk down Memory Lane:

Some of my first jobs in the world of publishing were setting type and binding books.

Later on, I moved up to being a keyboard jockey on one of these, the Mergenthaler Linotype, also known as The Eight Word Wonder.

A few years later the company got their first Linofilm, and I graduated to being a technician/operator.

Since those dark days, publishing technology has jumped forward with remarkable alacrity, but I’ve never given up on the art of printing.

Which brings us to…

WAYGOOZE (noun):

Wayzgoose was at one time an entertainment given by a master printer to his workmen each year on or about St Bartholomew’s Day. It marked the traditional end of summer and the start of the season of working by candlelight.

Later, the word came to refer to an annual outing and dinner for the staff of a printing works or the printers on a newspaper.

In modern parlance it is an annual gathering of printers.

Wayzgoose provides a wonderful opportunity to experience first-hand the traditions that turned us into a literate society.

Each year, practitioners of traditional book related crafts including letterpress printers, printmakers, paper makers and hand bookbinders gather at various places around the world to present their work to the public, renew connections with colleagues and share their expertise with the next generation of artists and artisans.

Among the many remarkable gatherings… This year, April 28th, marks the 34th Annual Wayzgoose Book Arts Fair in Grimsby Ontario.

This annual book arts fair brings together private presses from all across Canada and the United States.

Hope to see you there.
